What are physicals?
Physicals are preventive health screenings that check for signs of disease before you show symptoms. These head-to-toe exams assess your overall health and well-being.
Angela uses the information she gathers during each physical to create your individualized health plan. These screenings allow her to identify and track changes to your health as you age.
Physicals can help diagnose chronic diseases and illnesses in their early stages when they’re still treatable. They also detect risk factors that can increase your chances of developing certain conditions later in life, so you can adjust your lifestyle to minimize your risk.
What happens during physicals?
When you arrive for a physical, Angela and her friendly staff check your vital signs (temperature, respiration rate, and blood pressure). Next, Angela reviews your medical history and asks questions to update your records. She may ask:
- What medications are you taking?
- What does your diet include?
- How often do you exercise?
- Do you use tobacco products?
- How often do you drink alcohol?
- Have you ever been hospitalized?
- Do you have allergies?
- Are you experiencing any new or worsening symptoms?
Once Angela updates your medical records, she conducts the physical. She looks inside your ears, nose, and throat, listens to your heart and lungs, and touches your abdomen. She also tests your strength and reflexes.
Are there different types of physicals?
What happens during a routine physical depends on your age, health history, and family history. If you have a chronic disease or ongoing health concern, Angela may order lab work and additional testing. Angela performs all types of physicals at Hometown Clinic, including:
- Annual physicals
- Work physicals
- School physicals
- Sports physicals
- Department of Transportation (DOT) physicals
Make sure to bring any necessary paperwork to your physical. Some types of physicals require more preparation than others. If you’re unsure what to bring, contact Hometown Clinic before your visit.
How often should you schedule physicals?
Most people should schedule an annual physical at least every five years. Individuals over age 65 should visit at least once a year to track and monitor their health.
